Virginia Primary Election

On June 17, 2025, people in Virginia voted in the primary election. This vote helps decide
which candidates will represent each party in the main election later this year.

   What is a Primary Election?

A primary election is like the first round of voting. Political parties (like Democrats and
Republicans) choose their best candidates. These winners will then compete in the big election
(called the general election).

Which Positions Were on the Ballot?

Voters helped choose candidates for three important positions:

Lieutenant Governor (Deputy Governor)

  • Democrats: 6 people were running, including well-known names like Levar Stoney and Ghazala Hashmi.

  • Republicans: Only one person, John Reid, so he didn’t have to compete.

    Attorney General

  • Democrats: A close contest between Jay Jones and Shannon Taylor.

  • Republicans: Jason Miyares was the only one running.

    House of Delegates (State Assembly)

  • 100 seats in total, but primaries only happened in areas where more than one person from a party wanted to run.

   What Were the Key Highlights?

  • Big Voting Numbers: Over 200,000 people voted early in the Democratic primary. That’s a record!

  • More Action in Cities: Cities like Richmond saw a lot of voter interest.

  • Less Action for Republicans: Many of their candidates were already chosen, so fewer people voted.

Why Is This Important?

  • This election shows what voters are thinking before the big 2026 elections.

  • New faces like Ghazala Hashmi show that younger and diverse leaders are rising.

  • It also shows how much support Donald Trump still has in local politics.

    What’s Next?

  • Election Results: The vote results will be shown on the Virginia Elections website.

  • Main Election: The big election (called the general election) will happen in November 2025.

Final Words

The Virginia Primary Election 2025 was full of energy and showed how much people care
about their leaders. This vote is not just for Virginia — it gives a clue about what might happen in
the whole country next year.
