Northern Ireland to Celebrate 80 Years of VE Day
In May 2025, Northern Ireland will celebrate 80 years since VE Day — the day World War II ended in Europe. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered, and people across the UK and Europe celebrated the end of the war.
What Did Northern Ireland Do in the War?
During the war, Northern Ireland helped in many ways.
-
Belfast built ships for the British Navy.
-
Ports and airports were used by the Allied forces.
-
In 1941, Belfast was bombed in the Belfast Blitz, and many people died.
Even after that, people stayed strong and helped the country.
How Will the 80th Anniversary Be Celebrated?
Many events will take place to remember the war and the brave people who fought and died. These include:
-
Ceremonies at war memorials
-
Church services for prayer
-
A moment of silence to show respect
-
Old photos and items from the war in exhibitions
-
Veterans’ stories shared in schools
-
Light shows on buildings like Belfast City Hall
Special Events
Some special events will happen:
-
A big ceremony at Stormont, with leaders and army members
-
A reenactment (people acting like it’s the war time) in Lisburn & Castlereagh
-
A BBC show with real stories and videos from the war
Why This Day Is Important
VE Day is a time to say thank you to the people who helped win the war. It reminds us how hard people worked for freedom and peace. It also helps younger people learn about the past and why peace matters.
A government leader said:
” Even after 80 years, we remember the brave people who gave us freedom.”
