Modi and Vance praise progress in trade talks as
higher tariffs loom-

Summary:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance recently spoke
positively about the progress being made in trade negotiations between India and the
United States
. Their meeting comes at a tense time, as higher tariffs could soon be applied
to Indian goods if a deal isn’t reached.

During talks held in New Delhi, both leaders emphasized that discussions were moving in the
right direction. Modi highlighted the importance of strengthening economic ties with
the U.S., while Vance appreciated India’s efforts to boost cooperation in key areas like
technology,defense, and clean energy.

However, there’s still a sense of urgency. The U.S. had earlier paused some tariff hikes
for 90 days
, giving both countries time to settle their differences and work out a deal. If no
agreement is made, new tariffs could come into effect, which may hurt trade between
the two nations.

Both sides are hoping to reach an agreement soon — not only to prevent economic
damage
, but also to open the door for deeper strategic cooperation in the future. The
goal is to potentially double the trade volume in the coming years.
