Do students in west Belfast stand with         Kneecap

Yes, they do – and in a big way.

Kneecap is not just a music group for the youth in West Belfast — they’re seen as local heroes.
Their songs are bold, funny, and often political. They rap in both Irish and English, and they talk
about real issues like culture, identity, and injustice.

Who Are Kneecap?

Kneecap is a hip-hop trio from Belfast. They became famous for mixing Irish language with rap,
and for speaking out on political and social topics. Some people love them for being honest and
fearless, while others find them controversial.

But for students and young people, they’re something fresh and real.

Why Do Students Support Them?

  • Local roots: They’re from West Belfast, so people feel connected to them.

  • Irish language: They make speaking Irish cool again.

  • Donating to youth: They’ve given money (like £7,000) to local youth groups in both nationalist and unionist areas.

  • Speaking up: They say what many young people feel but don’t say out loud.

What About the Controversy?

Some of their lyrics, like “Kill your local MP,” caused trouble. But Kneecap said they don’t
support violence — it’s just about challenging the system. Many fans say it’s part of their art and
message.

What Does This Mean?

Kneecap stands for youth, culture, language, and speaking truth — and that’s why students in
West Belfast stand with them. To many young people, Kneecap gives them a voice.
