Salman Rushdie attacker sentenced to 25 Years in prison-
On May 16, 2025, Hadi Matar was sentenced to 25 years in prison in New York for attacking Salman Rushdie.
Matar tried to kill Rushdie by stabbing him 12 times during a public event in August 2022. Rushdie lost sight in one eye and can’t use one hand properly now. Another person, Henry Reese, was also hurt in the attack.
Matar showed no regret and said bad things about Rushdie in court. The judge gave him the maximum punishment because the attack was planned.
Rushdie wrote about this attack and how it affected him in his book called “Knife.” He said he is thankful to be alive but had a very hard time recovering.
Matar also faces other charges related to terrorism because he supported a group called Hezbollah and followed a religious order (fatwa) against Rushdie, even though that order was officially canceled.
