Pope Francis :
If Pope Francis passes away, the Catholic Church follows a respectful process. Here’s what
happens in a very simple way:
1. His Death Is Confirmed
A top Church leader called the Camerlengo makes sure the Pope has passed away. He calls the
Pope’s name three times. If there is no answer, the Pope is declared dead.
Then, the Pope’s special ring is broken — this shows his time as Pope is officially over.
2. Public Can Say Goodbye
-
The Pope’s body is placed in St. Peter’s Basilica so people can come and say their last goodbye.
-
A big funeral is held in St. Peter’s Square, with many leaders, bishops, and people from around the world.
-
Pope Francis had chosen to be buried in St. Mary Major Church, one of the oldest churches in Rome.

3. Nine Days of Mourning
The Church holds 9 days of special prayers called Novemdiales. During this time, peoplepray
and remember the Pope. Vatican flags are kept at half-mast.
4. Choosing the Next Pope
After the mourning, all cardinals under age 80 go into a private meeting called the Conclave.
-
They vote in secret.
-
If no Pope is chosen, black smoke comes out of the chimney.
-
When a new Pope is chosen, white smoke appears, and the Church says: “We have a Pope!”
5. Who Could Be the Next Pope?
Some names being talked about:
-
Pietro Parolin (Italy)
-
Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines)
-
Matteo Zuppi (Italy)
-
Péter Erdő (Hungary)
Since Pope Francis picked many of the cardinals who will vote, his replacement may have
similar views.

In Short:
-
Pope dies → Public pays respect → Funeral held
-
9 days of prayer → Cardinals meet → New Pope is chosen
The whole Catholic world watches and waits to see who the new leader will be.
