Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American hostage, was freed by Hamas on May 12, 2025, after being held in Gaza since October 7, 2023. He was captured during a Hamas attack on an Israeli military base near Gaza. After being released, Edan went to a hospital in Tel Aviv for a check-up and called his mother for the first time.
How He Was Released
His release happened because of talks between Hamas and the U.S. government. Hamas called it a “good faith step,” hoping it would lead to more peace talks and the release of other prisoners. Israel said it was due to U.S. pressure and military action, but they didn’t see it as a ceasefire.
Reactions
Edan’s family was very relieved, and a crowd in Tel Aviv welcomed him home. His mother, Yael, said it felt like a dream come true. His release also gave hope for the release of 58 other prisoners.
What’s Next?
Edan’s release might lead to talks between Israel and Hamas. But Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said peace talks can only happen under pressure, and there won’t be a ceasefire.
