Counter-Terrorism Police Investigating Kneecap Videos –

    Kneecap Counter
Background of the Controversy

UK counter-terrorism police have launched an investigation into the Irish hip-hop group
Kneecap after videos surfaced showing the group shouting controversial slogans like “Kill your
local MP”
and “Up Hamas, up Hezbollah.”
Since both Hamas and Hezbollah are proscribed terrorist organizations in the UK, promoting or
glorifying them is considered a criminal offense under UK law.

   What Triggered the Investigation?

The controversy stems from Kneecap’s live performances in London (Nov 2023 and Nov
2024)
, where these slogans were reportedly used. The Counter Terrorism Internet
Referral Unit
(CTIRU) reviewed video footage and deemed it serious enough to forward to the
Counter Terrorism Command for further investigation.

Kneecap’s Response

Kneecap has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

  • They argue that the clips are taken out of context.

  • They call the investigation a “smear campaign” targeting them because of their pro-Palestinian stance.

  • They clarified that they do not support any terrorist organization and condemn violence against civilians.

       Political & Public Reaction

  • A spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the slogans “completely unacceptable.”

  • Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative MP, called for Kneecap’s upcoming Glastonbury Festival performance to be canceled and for possible legal action.

  • On the other hand, many artists and public figures have come out in support of Kneecap, arguing that this is a violation of freedom of speech and artistic expression.

Who Are Kneecap?

  • Kneecap is a Belfast-based hip-hop trio known for rapping in both Irish and English, often tackling political themes.

  • Their 2024 biopic “Kneecap” premiered at Sundance and was later shortlisted for the Oscars.

  • They recently performed at Coachella, where they displayed messages criticizing Israel, further fueling controversy.

    Conclusion

This investigation highlights the complex tension between freedom of expression and
anti-terrorism laws
in the UK.
It raises important questions about how far artists can go in expressing political views, and how
such expressions are interpreted by the public and authorities.
